Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar will meet senior European officials in Brussels on Monday to revive diplomatic discussions with the European Union. The talks, part of the EU-Israel Association Council, will focus on Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, Israeli-Palestinian relations, and shifting regional dynamics.
This marks the first such meeting since 2022, co-chaired by Saar and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. Israel's ambassador to the EU, Haim Regev, emphasized that the dialogue is crucial for strengthening EU-Israel ties.
The October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, which killed 1,200 people and resulted in 251 hostages, led to Israel’s retaliatory offensive. Palestinian health authorities report over 48,000 deaths in Gaza, with hundreds of thousands displaced. The war has deepened divisions within the EU, with some nations defending Israel’s actions while others condemn its military response.
In February 2024, Spain and Ireland urged the European Commission to assess Israel’s compliance with human rights obligations under the 2000 EU-Israel Association Agreement, which governs political and economic cooperation. Ahead of Monday’s meeting, the EU’s 27 members reached a compromise, balancing support for Israel’s security with calls for displaced Gazans to return safely to their homes.
The EU is also weighing its role in Gaza’s post-war reconstruction. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump stirred controversy by proposing U.S. control over Gaza, suggesting a permanent displacement of Palestinians to create a luxury coastal hub.
As discussions unfold, the EU’s stance on Israel and Gaza will be under scrutiny, shaping future diplomatic and humanitarian efforts in the region.
