Donald Trump delivered his State of the Union address on Tuesday, Feb. 4, and it was evident that there is a big division between the political parties. This is because many of the Democrats protested and boycotted the president’s third SOTU by not showing up.
Democrats boycotted Trump’s SOTU
A couple of lawmakers like Maxine Waters, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Ayanna Pressley of the Democratic party have protested the POTUS’ address by skipping the event. The party’s representative from Tennessee, Steve Cohen, stated on Monday night that he would be joining his colleagues in the boycott.
“I have not attended prior Trump State of the Union addresses, and won't attend Tuesday night's,” Cohen said in a statement as per the Daily Mail. “It’s because I don't believe the President has the character or veracity necessary to address Congress from that August podium and is not worthy of the dignity and respect accorded to his predecessors.”
For some Democrats who were present at the SOTU, they protested Donald Trump’s speech by not standing up or clapping like the others. As for Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, she showed her disapproval by tearing up her copy of the president’s speech in half. When she was asked later why she made the gesture, she simply said that it’s “Because it was a manifesto of mistruths.”
The First Daughter attacks the POTUS’ critics
Ivanka Trump was one of those who attended the POTUS’ State of the Union address, so she witnessed the Democrats’ actions. In response, the First Daughter lashes on her father’s critics by saying that the snub and Pelosi’s actions are totally unforgivable.
After the president’s speech, Ivanka appeared on Fox’s “Hannity” and her thoughts on what transpired during the SOTU were revealed. She said dad, her father’s critics’ actions are “not forgivable” because this is the time for everyone to “come together as a nation and celebrate America’s success,” and yet this was what they have done.
“For us not to come together as a nation and celebrate America’s success is not forgivable,” she told host Sean Hannity during the interview. “And I think that’s why the viewers who were watching today and realizing and celebrating alongside the president, alongside the rest of this country, what is happening. Because we have completely changed the trajectory of this country.”
Meanwhile, Ivanka Trump’s appearance on the Fox News show came hours before Donald Trump is expected to be acquitted from the historic impeachment trial. The tally for conviction fell far below the 67-vote threshold that was needed for his removal from the office.
