North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has announced that new military and construction objectives will be unveiled during the upcoming Ninth Congress of the ruling Workers’ Party, according to state media outlet KCNA. The congress, one of North Korea’s most significant political events, is expected to review national achievements, outline future policy goals, and potentially introduce leadership changes.

Kim made the remarks during a ceremony marking the presentation of 50 newly built 600mm-calibre multiple rocket launchers to the party congress. The advanced rocket systems were reportedly gifted by North Korean munitions workers. According to KCNA, Kim described the launchers as having “virtually no difference from a high-precision ballistic missile in terms of precision and power.” He added that the weapons are suitable for carrying out a “strategic mission,” a phrase widely interpreted by analysts as a reference to potential nuclear strike capability.

South Korea’s Yonhap news agency noted that Kim’s mention of a “strategic mission” suggests the multiple rocket launchers could be designed for nuclear attack operations. KCNA further reported that the weapons integrate artificial intelligence technology and a compound guidance system, highlighting North Korea’s continued focus on modernizing its military capabilities.

The ceremony coincided with a groundbreaking event for a new construction project in Pyongyang’s Hwasong District, underscoring Kim’s parallel emphasis on national development and infrastructure expansion. In his speech, Kim stated that the Ninth Party Congress would define the next phase of North Korea’s self-reliant defense strategy and accelerate efforts to strengthen military power against external threats.

Analysts, including Hong Min of the Korea Institute for National Unification in Seoul, suggest the congress could begin as early as Thursday or Friday. The gathering is expected to shape North Korea’s defense policy, military modernization plans, and broader national strategy for the coming years.
