New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani is set to join Britain’s King Charles in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the 9/11 memorial during the monarch’s upcoming visit to the United States. The event will take place at the World Trade Center site in New York City, honoring the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, one of the deadliest tragedies in U.S. history.
The memorial commemorates the lives lost when al Qaeda militants hijacked commercial airplanes and crashed them into the Twin Towers. Among the 2,606 victims were 67 British citizens, making the ceremony particularly significant for both the United States and the United Kingdom. According to the mayor’s office, the ceremony highlights the enduring bond between the two nations in remembering the lives lost and standing united against terrorism.
Mayor Mamdani and King Charles are expected to attend the tribute together, although officials confirmed that no private meeting between the two is scheduled. The visit is part of King Charles’ broader state trip to the U.S., which runs from April 27 to April 30 and includes stops in Washington, D.C., New York, and Virginia.
During his visit, King Charles will also deliver a historic joint address to the U.S. Congress, marking the first time a British monarch has done so since Queen Elizabeth II’s speech in 1991. The visit underscores the importance of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and the U.K., even as recent tensions have emerged.
U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to meet privately with King Charles and host a formal state banquet for the king and Queen Camilla. Trump recently expressed confidence that the monarch could help strengthen ties between Washington and London, describing King Charles as a respected and influential figure capable of fostering positive relations.
This high-profile visit blends remembrance, diplomacy, and international cooperation, drawing global attention to both the 9/11 memorial ceremony and the evolving U.S.-U.K. relationship.
