Sports fans have many things to look forward to at the start of a new decade, and that includes the next fight for Manny Pacquiao. The reigning World Boxing Association’s Super welterweight champion has reportedly narrowed down the list of his possible opponents in 2020 while his camp continues to work on a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Manny Pacquiao’s potential early 2020 opponents include Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter
Shortly after Pacquiao defeated Keith Thurman last July, the athlete-politician made it clear that he has more fights left before officially retiring. Obviously, he has been wanting to secure a rematch with Mayweather. But while that remains elusive, he is moving forward to clash with other deserving opponents.
MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons recently talked to Seconds Out, reiterating the names that are most likely joining Pacquiao in a blockbuster match card in early 2020, including Danny Garcia, Mikey Garcia, and Shawn Porter. He also confirmed that Pacquiao’s camp is looking forward to setting up a fight with Errol Spence Jr., especially after it was reported that he did not sustain any major injuries or broken bones from his car accident last October.
Gibbons also confirmed reports that they are eyeing a March or April match. The international boxing matchmaker, however, reiterated that the Mayweather rematch is what Pacquiao’s camp wants the most. “The real pot at the end of the rainbow is ‘Mayweather 2.’”
The latest reports on the sought-after boxing rematch claim that negotiations were at a standstill because Pacquiao is insistent on fighting in a professional match while Mayweather only wanted an exhibition fight. However, the American boxing icon already announced last month that he is coming out of retirement. Mayweather has yet to clarify whether he will pursue boxing matches or officially fight in mixed martial arts.
Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather 2: Oscar de la Hoya bets on American boxer to win rumored rematch
With Mayweather announcing his going back to fight professionally, the predictions and analyses have surfaced here and there on who would win between him and Pacquiao. As for Oscar de la Hoya, the American boxer has the advantage. “He takes care of himself, he has a strict training regimen, he’s a professional when it comes to his craft,” de la Hoya explained to EsNews.
However, the boxer-turned-promoter only anticipates Mayweather to go up against another MMA fighter. Both Pacquiao and Mayweather fought and defeated de la Hoya in 2007 and 2008, respectively, leading to his retirement announcement in 2009.
