First lady Melania Trump often reaches out to groups and communities, especially making her presence known during the lockdown. Under her Be Best initiative, Melania took part in a conference call with the Youth Preparedness Council of the Federal Emergency Management Agency or FEMA.
According to the statement from the White House, Melania participated in the YPC’s annual summit through a conference call Tuesday. Administrator Gaynor was also present aside from the council members, the group having been formed back in 2012 to assemble youth leaders to support disaster preparedness. Gaynor discussed the importance of the council, along with the achievements of its members.
Melania joined in on the discussion of how children in America can be more equipped for emergencies not just in their homes but in their schools and local communities. The first lady noted how it is the children who are the most at risk during a disaster as well as its aftermath, and thanked the council and its members for their efforts in making sure children are prepared for potential emergencies through various projects.
“One of the main pillars of my Be Best initiative focuses on the well-being of children, which includes the importance of educating young people from all backgrounds how to prepare for emergency situations. This Council embodies that pillar by integrating your voices and vital lessons for children into emergency preparedness. It is never too early for young people to learn how to react and cope during emergency situations,” said Melania.
Previously, the first lady made an unannounced visit to first responders at a fire department, the Engine Company 9 fire station, in Washington DC to personally deliver boxed lunches prepared by White House chefs as well as Be Best tote bags and some personal protective equipment like face masks and hand sanitizers. Melania also met and spoke with the neighboring DC Metropolitan Police Department, where she listened to the officials’ concerns and challenges about their work, especially at this time, where the coronavirus cases spike along with the deaths.
The first lady shared a video of her visit on Twitter, thanking the officials from both departments for their work.
