In a harrowing incident on December 22, 2024, a Guatemalan migrant was arrested for allegedly setting a sleeping woman on fire aboard a stationary F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station in Brooklyn. The attack, occurring just three days before Christmas, has shocked the community and raised concerns about safety in New York City's subway system.
The Incident
Around 7:30 a.m., the suspect reportedly used a lighter to ignite the clothing of an unidentified woman who was asleep on the train. After setting her ablaze, he allegedly sat across from her, watching as she was engulfed in flames. Patrolling officers, alerted by the smoke, arrived promptly but found the victim deceased, her clothing completely burned off. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the act as "one of the most depraved crimes one person could possibly commit against another human being."
Apprehension of the Suspect
Following the attack, the suspect remained in the vicinity, and surveillance footage captured images of him. Later, a witness spotted him riding another train near 34th Street. Thanks to the vigilance of three high school students who recognized him from the released images, police apprehended the suspect on a subway car at Herald Square. He was found wearing the same clothes as during the attack and had a lighter in his possession. Authorities have stated that there is no known connection between the suspect and the victim.
Community Reaction
The brutality of the crime has left the community in shock, especially given its proximity to the holiday season. An MTA worker remarked, "That's messed up—it's only three days until Christmas," reflecting the sentiments of many New Yorkers grappling with the tragedy.
Social Media Responses
The incident has sparked a wave of reactions on social media platforms. Twitter user @NYCCommuter expressed horror, stating, "I can't believe something so heinous could happen on our subway. We need better security." In contrast, @JusticeForVictims emphasized the need for justice, tweeting, "This monster must face the full extent of the law for such a barbaric act."
Another user, @TransitSafetyNow, noted, "This tragedy underscores the urgent need for increased safety measures in our public transit systems." Conversely, @HumanRightsFirst argued, "While the crime is horrific, we must also address the systemic issues that lead to such acts."
Additionally, @EndViolenceNYC emphasized the importance of community vigilance: "We all have a role in keeping our city safe. Report suspicious activities immediately." Meanwhile, @PolicyReformAdvocate commented, "This incident should prompt a serious discussion on policy reforms to enhance public safety."
Safety Concerns in NYC Subways
This incident is part of a troubling trend of violence within New York City's subway system. Despite increased security measures, including the deployment of National Guard troops, subway murders have risen by 60% this year, with nine homicides reported in 2024 compared to five in 2023. The attack on the F train was one of several violent incidents in the subway over a 24-hour period, including a fatal stabbing and another assault.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of the victim and grapples with concerns about safety in public spaces. The NYPD urges anyone with additional information to come forward to assist in their efforts to ensure justice is served.
