Spanish power and gas utility Naturgy Energy Group SA will install up to 280 MW of green hydrogen production capacity in La Robla, Spain, through the Robla Hub joint venture, formed with Enagas Renovable.
The investment is estimated at around $519.5 million.
The partners plan to use the site of Naturgy’s old La Robla thermal power plant, which is now being dismantled, as the location for the electrolyzers. These will be powered by several solar PV plants totaling around 450 MW that will be commissioned in the nearby municipalities.
The electrolysis plant will initially be equipped with 60 MW.
But with the presence of industrial hydrogen consumers in the area and the site’s proximity to the future hydrogen pipeline, the JV partners expect the electrolysis capacity to expand to 280 MW.
According to the utility, there are also possibilities to support local hydrogen mobility efforts.
