When Nvidia announced the existence of the GTX 1080 Ti video card back in February, it caused a ripple of concern due to how it surpassed the more expensive Titan X. Why would the company do that to its own top-end product? Nvidia just put these concerns to rest by releasing an even more powerful version of its Titan X GPU called the Titan Xp. It’s the company’s biggest beast.
In specs alone, the Titan Xp packs more of a punch than the 1080 Ti thanks to its 3,840 CUDA cores, The Motley Fool reports. It also sports a 12 gigabyte GDDR5X RAM, which runs at 11.4 gigabits per second. Although this is great news for hardcore gamers who simply must have the best graphics capabilities, it is a little odd for Nvidia to announce the Titan Xp so close to the launch of the 1080 Ti.
Most speculate that this move is to make sure that the Titan brand is kept fresh, which was dampened a bit by releasing a much cheaper GPU early on. At $1,200, gamers would need some really good reasons to keep on buying Titan graphics cards when there is a $699 option on the market that delivers the same performance, after all.
In related news, it seems that there will be a new driver set that will be released by Nvidia this month, which will allow for better compatibility with Mac systems. The driver will be out later in the month, Extreme Tech reports, and it will provide support to Pascal-based systems on Apple’s products.
As amazing as this sounds, many are of the opinion that it is ultimately a pointless gesture. For one thing, this compatibility service is only workable with much older MacBook Pro units. Applying it to current notebooks would require several peripherals and a complicated network of accessories that almost no one would bother with. Then again, this might just be Nvidia’s way of telling Apple that it can also accommodate its Mac line, just as AMD can.
