The classic Super Mario 64 handily reinvented the adventures of everyone’s favorite former Italian plumber. Now, fans can revisit this wonderful experience with their friends thanks to the multiplayer feature that modders have put into the game. Players are now being advised to act fast and try it out before Nintendo completely obliterates it with a cease and desist letter.
First launched 21 years ago, this hallmark of a game changed a lot of things in the industry, spurring a new era of video game development. Some fans thought that as a tribute, they would release a downloadable mod for the game, which would allow multiplayer functionality. As Engadget points out, however, Nintendo is not exactly the most tolerant company in the world when it comes to players messing around with its properties.
The people behind this project call themselves Kaze Emanuar, Melonspeedruns, and Marshivolt. The mod itself is called Super Mario 64 Online, which is fitting considering what the tool does.
Just for clarification, however, this particular software does not apply to the original console version of the game. Rather, it requires an emulator that can play the ROM, which would require a PC with decent specs.
If all of the requirements are met, up to 24 players will be able to run around in the same game, Polygon reports. Playable characters would, of course, including both Mario and Luigi, but there’s also Waluigi and Princess Peach, among others.
Starting now, gamers have a few days at most before Nintendo takes note of the situation and asks the developers to shut the tool down. As such, players should expect an influx of fans who want to revisit the world of Super Mario 64, which they could only experience as a single player title in the past. A considerable amount of chaos due to the varying abilities is inevitable, as well.
