In the latest episode of “This Is Us,” fans are finally being treated to a happy Pearson event: the courthouse wedding of Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore). However, the episode also showed us the first signs of marriage trouble, and which could be one of the catalysts to the couple’s breakup in the future.
As the episode fast-forward to the Pearsons’ life following their wedding, Jack was visibly disturbed when his bestfriend Miguel (Jon Huertas) announced that he and his wife will be getting a divorce. After planning (and executing) what seems to be a romantic evening with Rebecca, Rebecca revealed that she wanted to recapture her musical glory by joining on a five-state tour with former bandmate Ben (Sam Trammell).
That part of the episode had made true fans uncomfortable, including Moore’s parents. Moore shared a screengrab of her conversation with her parents, and they were not happy with her character.
"Great show tonight Mimi!!! Pretty heavy!!! Wow! Xoxoxo. Although Rebecca has issues, doesn't she? Hopefully she is made to look better in future episodes. Right now, Jack is the superhero," her mother’s message read.
Moore’s father chimed in and said, "You are so mean. After Jack was so sweet and romantic, you tell him about the tour. You timing was awful."
Series creator Dan Fogelman said that Ben, and not the music, will eventually problematic for the couple. He told Entertainment Weekly, “Ben is not heavily in this episode, but he is heavily in the ones to come. He’s a source of both friction and jealousy for Jack as we go deeper down the line in the series.”
