Tofurky, a processor of plant-analog proteins, will collaborate with Triton Algae Innovations to develop products incorporating protein from “essential red” algae.
Jaime Athos, CEO of Tofurky, said that the opportunity for the companies to combine their knowledge and understanding of the plant-based market with the nutrition and natural supply-chain technology created by Triton’s algae is unique and timely.
The process involves the selection and cultivation of algae strains that are rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and other beneficial nutrients.
The products would be rolled out in the first quarter of next year, although the company's announcement did not furnish any descriptions or other specifics.
Athos noted that while they can’t share just yet what the products are, it would resonate with their core audience and be attractive to the rapidly growing flexitarian segment who are increasingly drawn to plant-based foods.
