President-elect Donald Trump has called for the immediate downing of unidentified drones observed over several East Coast states, including New Jersey, New York, and Maryland. These sightings have raised significant security concerns, particularly due to their proximity to sensitive locations such as military installations and Trump's Bedminster golf course.
Escalating Drone Sightings Near Sensitive Areas
Since late November, residents and officials have reported numerous drone sightings near critical infrastructure. Notably, clusters of drones have been observed along the Raritan River in New Jersey, close to the Picatinny Arsenal military base and the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster.
These incidents have prompted federal investigations to determine the drones' origins and intentions.
Federal Response and Legal Constraints
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas addressed the issue, suggesting that many of the drones are likely commercial and pose no significant threat. He emphasized that current legal frameworks limit the Department of Homeland Security's authority to neutralize drones, stating, "We can't shoot them down."
Mayorkas advocated for expanded legal powers to effectively manage potential drone threats.

Lawmakers have expressed frustration over the lack of information regarding these drone activities. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy urged federal agencies to collaborate and provide clarity, highlighting the public's growing concern.
