U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday he believes a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza could be reached within a week. Speaking at the White House during an unrelated event, Trump noted ongoing conversations with key figures involved in mediation efforts, although he did not specify who.
Trump, who claimed near-daily contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the recent Israel-Iran conflict, said, “We think within the next week we’re going to get a ceasefire.” His remarks come amid heightened tensions and renewed diplomatic momentum following a ceasefire in the brief but intense 12-day Israel-Iran conflict earlier this week.
Hamas has signaled willingness to release remaining hostages in Gaza under a ceasefire deal, but maintains it will not disarm. Israel, however, insists any truce is contingent on Hamas being dismantled. The October 7, 2023 Hamas-led assault on Israel left 1,200 dead and 251 taken hostage, according to Israeli figures. In response, Israel launched a sustained military campaign in Gaza that has, according to Gaza’s health ministry, killed over 56,000 Palestinians and displaced nearly the entire population.
The ongoing war has sparked global outrage and led to legal actions against Israel at both the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, with accusations of genocide and war crimes—allegations Israel denies.
White House officials, including U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, have yet to confirm any new breakthroughs. Witkoff previously played a role in a short-lived ceasefire deal under the Biden administration.
Meanwhile, Israeli Minister for Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer is set to visit Washington for discussions with Trump administration officials regarding Gaza, Iran, and a possible Netanyahu visit to the White House.
