U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that Ukraine has an opportunity to regain control of its occupied territories, voicing clear dissatisfaction with Russia’s performance in the ongoing war. Speaking to reporters during a meeting in the Oval Office, Trump emphasized that Russia is faltering on the battlefield, suggesting that this could open a window for Ukraine to push forward.
“They have a shot at it because I’ve been watching the way Russia is and what Russia has been doing. I’m very dissatisfied with what Russia is doing,” Trump said. He went on to add that, in his view, Russia is “doing poorly” in the conflict, a rare direct critique of Moscow’s military capabilities.
Trump’s remarks come as global attention remains fixed on the Russia-Ukraine war, which has reshaped international security, disrupted energy markets, and intensified NATO’s role in Eastern Europe. Ukraine has continued to receive significant Western support, particularly from the United States and European allies, who have supplied weapons, intelligence, and financial aid to bolster its resistance.
For Trump, who has previously expressed mixed views on both Ukraine and Russia, this strong statement signals a tougher stance on Moscow’s actions. His comments may also influence U.S. foreign policy discussions, especially as debates continue over the level of military and economic aid Washington should provide to Kyiv.
The war in Ukraine remains one of the most pressing geopolitical issues of the decade, with millions displaced and heavy casualties reported on both sides. Trump’s remarks underline not only his dissatisfaction with Russia but also his belief that Ukraine still has a viable chance to change the course of the conflict.
With the situation evolving daily, Trump’s comments add further weight to the global conversation surrounding Ukraine’s resilience and Russia’s mounting challenges on the battlefield.
