U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced plans for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to address the Russia-Ukraine war. Speaking at Mar-a-Lago, Trump said, “He wants to meet, and we are setting it up. We have to get that war over with. That’s a bloody mess.”
Trump’s return to the White House on Jan. 20 has raised hopes for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, which began in February 2022. However, Ukraine fears a potential peace deal could involve significant territorial concessions to Russia. Trump’s advisers have suggested proposals that could grant Moscow control over parts of Ukraine for an extended period.
The Biden administration has allocated over $175 billion in aid to Ukraine, including $60 billion in military assistance. It remains uncertain whether Trump will continue this level of support, as he has expressed a desire to end the conflict swiftly.
The Kremlin has acknowledged Trump’s intentions, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov stating that Putin is open to dialogue. However, he noted it would be appropriate to wait for Trump’s inauguration before formal discussions begin.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy views Trump’s involvement as pivotal in determining the war’s outcome and potentially halting Putin’s aggression.
Trump’s comments underscore his focus on resolving one of the most pressing global crises. As the world watches, the outcome of his proposed talks with Putin could reshape the geopolitical landscape and Ukraine’s future.
