Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone call Friday focused on bolstering Ukraine’s air defenses amid escalating Russian drone and missile attacks. Zelenskiy said the conversation covered the potential expansion of Patriot missile system deliveries, joint defense production, and increased investments to strengthen Kyiv’s ability to “defend the sky.”
The Ukrainian leader emphasized the need for continued U.S. military support, particularly Patriot systems, which are seen as crucial to protecting cities from intensifying Russian strikes. A source told Reuters the dialogue was “very good,” and suggested that a resumption of Patriot missile shipments is possible.
The call came after the U.S. paused certain weapons deliveries to Ukraine, raising concerns in Kyiv about vulnerabilities in defending against Russian advances. Germany, meanwhile, has entered talks to purchase Patriot systems to help bridge Ukraine’s defense gap.
According to Axios, the conversation lasted around 40 minutes. Trump reportedly told Zelenskiy he would review which U.S. weapons shipments had been halted. Later, in his nightly address, Zelenskiy confirmed both sides agreed to organize meetings between their teams to advance air defense cooperation and joint production.
The discussion followed a Thursday call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which Trump described as “disappointing.” Hours later, Russia launched the largest drone strike on Kyiv since the war began—an attack Zelenskiy condemned as “massive and cynical.”
Trump also spoke with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, discussing Ukraine’s defense needs and broader trade issues, according to Spiegel. While Ukraine previously received Patriot batteries under the Biden administration, Trump has been critical of supplying weapons without reciprocal deals and has shifted the tone of U.S.-Ukraine relations since taking office.
