Rowena Maguire

Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law, Queensland University of Technology
Rowena Maguire is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Law and a Domain Leader within the Transforming Innovation System within the Institute for Future Environments at the Queensland University of Technology. She is also a visiting fellow at Strathmore Law School, Nairobi, Kenya and a Research Affiliates at the Cambridge Centre for Climate Change Mitigation Research. Rowena’s research is primarily concerned with equitable design and implementation of climate and environmental law with a focus on the land sector, specifically forest and agricultural regulation. Her current research projects focus on gender and land sector governance and waste management and gendered implications.

Her PhD research examined the international regulation of forest resources, published as a monograph: Global Forest Governance: Legal Concepts and Policy Trends (Edward Elgar, 2013). Following on from this study, Rowena was appointed as a Research Affiliate to the Cambridge Centre for Climate Change Mitigation Research and worked on a donor REDD+ project in Kenya. From 2014- 2016, Rowena was a Chief Investigator on an Australian Research Council Discovery project examining international climate governance integrity issues. Rowena is currently working on a project funded by Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) examining Agriculture based emission-reduction options to support Nationally Determined Contributions in Vietnam and Fiji. In this project Rowena is responsible for examining land tenure arrangements, gender and governance arrangements.
Rowena is also collaborating on transdisciplinary research teams within the Institute for Future Environments at QUT on projects concerning waste reduction and re-use. She is interested in this gendered dimensions of waste management and reduction and the regulatory nudges that shift human behaviour.

Projects include:

- Designing Plastic Waste Out;
- Reducing Waste at QUT;
- Regulation of Sustainable Fashion and fashion waste.

Rowena coordinates the units ‘Environmental and Sustainability Law’ and ‘Introduction to International Law’ in the undergraduate program within the School of Law and supervises higher degree research students in the areas of international environmental and human rights law.
