Jeremy Millard

Visiting Senior Research Fellow, University of Bradford
I am currently Senior Consultant at the Danish Technological Institute and have Visiting Senior Research Fellowships at both Galway University (Ireland) and Bradford University (UK), as well as earlier at Brunel University (UK). I am an alumnus from London University UK, was a founding academic in 1971 of the UK’s Open University, have since taught at Aarhus University in Denmark, and also run my own consulting research company since 2012. With an educational background in both the social and pure sciences as well as in pedagogy, I have over forty years’ experience working with governments, development agencies, and private and civil sectors in all parts of the world (currently Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia). My current work ranges across social, inclusive and open innovation; harnessing innovations with nature; sustainable development and the SDGs; public service innovations; good governance and digital governance; the maker movement; the so-called fourth industrial revolution; as well as smart green cities and issues related to urban, rural and regional development. Current and recent EC projects include URBINAT nature-based solutions for inclusive urban regeneration, the Social Innovation Community project, the Social Innovation Driving Force for Social Change project (in particular on social innovation in support of poverty reduction and sustainable development), and I am participating in a JRC ISPRA supported COST project on citizen science. I have also supported the EC’s DG R&I and DG CONNECT in developing the H2020 work programmes for 2016-20, for example as rapporteur for the External Advisory Group for SC6 (social sciences and humanities). I am working with the World Bank on their support for the Indian smart city programme in collaboration with South Korean colleagues; have co-authored the knowledge societies policy handbook for UNESCO; and for UNDESA in New York recently prepared a background paper on innovation and inter-connectivity for social development in support of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. I also regularly provide consultancy services for the OECD, and undertake research funding evaluations for the EC, the Academy of Finland’s Strategic Research Division and for the Polish Institute of Advanced Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences.
