Reader in EU External Relations Law, University of Sheffield
I am a Reader in EU External Relations at the School of Law, University of Sheffield. My research interests span EU Law and Policy, especially External Relations/Foreign Policy, Migration Law and Policy, relations with European Neighbourhood and Mediterranean states, New Governance, legal scholarship of the EU and aspects of UK Constitutional Law. I am currently researching the foreign policy aspects of the EU referendum in the UK. I have been awarded funding from the ESRC under the UK in a Changing Europe initiative.
I have published two books and numerous articles in leading journals. I have appeared as a commentator on BBC Breakfast and given keynote lectures across the globe, most recently in Malaysia and Armenia. I am Treasurer of the University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES), one of the largest academic associations in the UK. I speak French fluently, Japanese to a conversational level and am currently learning Turkish.
For my educational history, I graduated from the University of Warwick with LLB Law in 1999. My degree included a year studying French Law at the University of Lille. I then did postgraduate study at Nagoya University, Japan which led to a LLM by research awarded by Warwick. Whilst working at the University of Bordeaux in France, I undertook a DEA (French Master's degree) in Comparative Politics and International Relations. After my appointment as a Lecturer at the University of Sheffield in 2003, I begun part-time PHD research in 2004 at the University of Edinburgh, which I completed in 2008. I was promoted to Senior Lecturer and then Reader in 2011 and was Deputy Head of School and Director of the Sheffield Centre for International and European Law (SCIEL) 2012-2015.
