Gorana Grgic

Lecturer in US Politics and Foreign Policy, US Studies Centre, University of Sydney

Gorana was awarded a PhD in International Relations at the University of Sydney in 2014. Gorana’s dissertation explored the dynamics of political liberalisation and ethnic conflicts in former Soviet and Yugoslav regions. Her doctoral research was complementary to an Australian Research Council-funded Discovery Project “Political Institutions, War, and Peace: Global and Regional Dynamics” (Chief Investigator: Assoc. Prof. Ben Goldsmith).

Gorana has been affiliated with the US Studies Centre since early 2011. In 2012, she was awarded the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Dean’s Citation for Excellence in Tutorials. In 2013, she was the recipient of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Postgraduate Teaching Fellowship.

Gorana's first book, Ethnic Conflict in Asymmetric Federations: Comparative Experience of the Former Soviet and Yugoslav Regions, will be published in 2017 by Routledge.

Gorana holds a Master of International Studies degree from the University of Sydney, where she graduated in 2010 and was awarded the Hedley Bull Prize for Postgraduate Coursework. Gorana graduated summa cum laude from the University of Zagreb in 2008 and holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Macroeconomics. Her undergraduate degree was partially completed at the National University of Singapore where she was an exchange student.

In between her undergraduate and postgraduate studies, Gorana worked for the United Nations Development Programme in Croatia. In recent times she has also been a part-time producer and journalist for SBS Radio in Sydney.

Her research interests include: democratisation; ethnic conflicts; third-party intervention in civil conflicts; US foreign policy.

Her expertise areas are: US domestic politics and foreign policy, US-Russia relations, foreign intervention in conflicts, transatlantic relations, ethnic conflicts and conflict resolution.
