Research Associate, Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab Asia Tenggara (J-PAL SEA)
Ntuthuko Hlela is an economist with diverse experience in both research and consulting roles. He is currently a Research Associate at the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) and serves as an Economic Research Assistant to Maya Goldman. Previously, he worked as a Junior Economic Consultant for the World Bank and an Economic Researcher for the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU).
Hlela is pursuing a Master of Commerce specializing in Economic Development at the University of Cape Town, with a year spent at the University of Paris Pantheon Sorbonne on an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship. He also holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) and a Bachelor of Art in Economics, both from the University of KwaZulu Natal, where he graduated with high distinction (Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude, respectively).
His project work/experience includes collaborations with the South African Presidency on improving the Social Relief of Distress Grant and research on tax financing options for social protection, as well as the impact of fiscal policy on income distribution in Côte d’Ivoire, Benin and Mongolia.
