His main interest has been in the extent to which the power elite has included members of previously excluded groups – such as Jews, women, African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans and LGBT individuals – the reasons they have or have not been included and the effects on their identities once they have become part of the power elite.
Zweigenhaft has also have done research on a variety of topics in personality and social psychology, including the psychological effects of unusual names, birth order, attitudes toward and knowledge about nuclear war, self monitoring, music preferences and signature size as an unobtrusive measure of status and self-esteem. He is the co-editor of an anthology titled "Collaboration in Psychological Science: Behind the Scenes."
