With all the excitement over self-driving vehicles and autopilot features, it was only to be expected that something would be lost in translation. This is exactly what is happening with Tesla vehicles where owners think that turning on the “Autopilot” feature would free them of responsibility behind the wheel. Germany has therefore sent out letters to Tesla owners, reminding them that the feature is not meant to take over driving but rather to assist.
With numerous reports of Tesla owners crashing their vehicles with the “Autopilot” turned on, resulting in several deaths in the U.S. and China, Elon Musk’s car company was getting a lot of the wrong kind of attention. Now, German Tesla owners are getting government-issued letters from the Federal Motor Authority to remind them of the “Autopilot” feature’s actual purpose, Reuters reports.
Tesla drivers are to remain alert on the road at all times, the letter indicates because the feature is only meant to assist in driving. This particular portion is backed by German road laws as well, the letter adds, which makes it subject to certain punishments if flouted.
As Engadget notes, the “Autopilot” feature is unable to actually take over all of the driving functions that a human driver is meant to handle. As of right now, it’s only able to switch lanes without assistance and stop/go by measuring the distance between the Tesla car and the vehicle in front of it.
It’s clear that Tesla wants to take their technology to a fully autonomous level, but it just has not reached that far yet. This is why Germany is also asking Tesla to stop using the world “Autopilot” when referring to its driving assistance software. It simply borders on being misleading due to the functionality that it connotes, which is contrary to what it can actually do.
