Apple Intelligence’s AI notification summary feature is under fire after producing a misleading headline about Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the UnitedHealth CEO’s death. The BBC called out the tech giant, raising serious concerns about the accuracy of its iOS 18.1 AI tools.
BBC Flags Issues with Apple Intelligence's Notification Summary
Apple Intelligence's notification summary feature has not been well-received by the BBC. Accusations against Luigi Mangione, the man detained this week on suspicion of murdering the CEO of UnitedHealth Group, were "generated a false headline" according to the company's notification summary function.
Mangione allegedly took his own life, according to the notification summary:
“Luigi Mangione shoots himself; Syrian mother hopes Assad pays the price; South Korea police raid Yoon Suk Yeol’s office.”
Introduced with iOS 18.1, the summarize notifications capability is a component of Apple Intelligence. When you have many alerts from the same app, the summary will be at the very top of the stack. To see the complete stack of alerts and their individual text, users simply tap on the summary.
Misleading Summaries Spark BBC's Concern
The BBC News app appears to have sent Apple Intelligence three headline notifications, and the summary appears to have summarized each one using a semicolon. The whole notification on Luigi Mangione that resulted in this inaccurate summary has not been made public by the BBC.
Both the story on South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and the one regarding Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria were accurately summarized by Apple Intelligence.
"BBC News is the most trusted news media in the world," stated a representative for the BBC. “It is essential to us that our audiences can trust any information or journalism published in our name and that includes notifications.”
AI Errors Extend Beyond Apple Intelligence
"To raise this concern and fix this problem," the BBC claims to have contacted Apple. No word yet from Apple.
The BBC also referenced a Bluesky piece that demonstrated how Apple Intelligence twisted a headline from the New York Times regarding Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel.
These kinds of issues can affect anything that uses a broad language model; they aren't limited to Apple Intelligence, 9to5Mac points out. To further understand the errors in Apple Intelligence's report, it would be helpful if the BBC could supply the complete text of the initial notification.
Managing Notification Summaries on iOS
By accessing the Settings app, selecting "Notifications," and then choosing "Summarize Notifications," you are able to control which alerts are summarized on your iPhone.
