As the highly anticipated presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris draws near, concerns are mounting among conservative commentators about Trump’s readiness for the showdown. According to National Review commentator Ramesh Ponnuru, Trump may be heading into a potential disaster if his campaign does not adequately prepare him for what could be a high-stakes encounter.
Trump, known for his off-the-cuff style and resistance to traditional debate preparation, may find himself at a disadvantage against Harris, a candidate known for her sharpness and energy on the debate stage. Ponnuru’s analysis, shared during a conversation with CNN’s Phil Mattingly, highlights the challenges Trump could face if he underestimates Harris or fails to adequately prepare.
The former president's performance in past debates, particularly against Joe Biden, has not inspired confidence. Ponnuru pointed out that while Biden's debate performance earlier this year was widely criticized and ultimately contributed to his withdrawal from the race, Trump’s own showing was far from stellar. The risk now, Ponnuru suggests, is that Trump’s weaknesses as a candidate will be more glaringly exposed if he faces a more dynamic opponent like Harris.
The ongoing debate over the format and rules for the upcoming face-off has only added to the uncertainty. A key point of contention between the two campaigns is whether the candidates’ microphones should be muted while the other is speaking. The Biden campaign had initially agreed to this condition, which may have inadvertently benefited Trump by limiting his ability to interrupt and dominate the conversation. However, with Harris now taking the stage, the dynamics could shift.
Ponnuru’s concerns are not just about Trump’s debate style but also about the broader strategy—or lack thereof—being employed by his campaign. He suggests that Trump’s reluctance to engage in extensive debate preparation could leave him vulnerable. Unlike some candidates who might overprepare, Trump’s reliance on his natural instincts and improvisation could backfire in a setting where precision and discipline are key.
Reflecting on Trump’s past debate performances, Ponnuru noted that if Biden’s performance hadn’t been so disastrous, Trump’s own shortcomings would have been more apparent. This raises questions about whether Trump’s team is adequately considering the challenges posed by Harris, who is expected to bring a different level of energy and focus to the debate.
As the debate approaches, the pressure is on for Trump to avoid what Ponnuru describes as a potential “trap.” With Harris expected to bring her A-game, any missteps by Trump could have significant repercussions, particularly in an election cycle where every moment on the debate stage counts.
