If there was anyone who would know exactly what the consequences of the damning phone call that was leaked between Donald Trump and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, it would be Carl Bernstein. Bernstein, who co-broke the Watergate scandal, recently weighed in on the revelations and described this as “worse” than the Watergate incident.
Speaking on CNN, Bernstein was pressed on whether the release of the one-hour phone conversation between Trump and Raffensperger made him remember Watergate. The incident in the 1970s led to Richard Nixon stepping down from the presidency after it was revealed that he covered up a break-in into the DNC office to get campaign secrets. Bernstein replied that this was not “deja vu” and that this was worse than Watergate.
“This is not deja vu. This is something far worse than Watergate,” said Bernstein, who described the conversation revealing Trump asking Raffensperger to “find” votes for him to overturn election results. Bernstein added that this showed how far Trump was willing to go to not only place distrust in the electoral system but also start a coup to stay in power. “In any other presidency, this tape would be evidence enough to result in the impeachment of the president of the United States, his conviction in the Senate of the United States, and really, an immediate call by members of Congress - including his own party - that he resign immediately.”
Many Republicans have mostly stayed quiet since the release of the audio while others have now called for Trump’s immediate impeachment. Vice president-elect Kamala Harris also blasted Trump following the recordings that surfaced, calling the move an “abuse of power.”
Despite a vaccine already being administered to the public, Trump continued to attack the Centers for Disease Control for supposedly exaggerating the death toll. As of now, the US leads the world in deaths from COVID-19 with over 350,000. Top infectious disease expert and now a chief expert on COVID-19 under Joe Biden’s incoming administration, Dr. Anthony Fauci, refuted Trump’s claims while speaking on ABC News.
Dr. Fauci refuted Trump’s claims that the deaths in the US are real, and the health care workers on the front lines are also feeling the actual stress from tending to COVID patients.
