With less than a month to go before Donald Trump is to depart from the White House to make way for Joe Biden, many more officials are publicly announcing their acknowledgment of the Democrat’s victory. Following Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s acknowledgment of Biden, Trump blasted the lawmaker.
An aide to Trump emailed the Republicans in Congress a graph that showed polls during McConnell’s reelection race against his Democratic challenger Amy McGrath. The graph also showed two events that involved Trump, suggesting the outgoing president’s tweet last June 19 when he was touting McConnell and the October 31 robocall was what won him his reelection. “SADLY, MITCH FORGOT. HE WAS THE FIRST ONE OFF THE SHIP!” was written on the subject line of the email.
However, at the time, Trump constantly attacked the polls as fake. The graph also failed to take into consideration other factors, such as the performance of McGrath, the economy, and what ended up working in the favor of the GOP in the House and Senate. It should be added that McConnell was in a comfortable position among the Republican incumbents to maintain their seats.
This comes days after McConnell broke away to acknowledge that Biden won the elections once the Electoral College cast their votes. Trump has repeatedly touted his widely-refuted claims of election fraud, his lawsuits of which were unsuccessful in both the states he has filed in and the Supreme Court. Congress will be meeting to count the electoral votes on January 6, and McConnell has urged his fellow Republicans at the Senate not to challenge the results.
Meanwhile, Trump vetoed the massive NDAA defense bill that both chambers of Congress passed by veto-proof majorities. Because Trump vetoed the bill, it may set up a veto override vote that would put Republicans in a position to vote against him. Congress is expected to make its next move on Monday, where the pressure is on the House Republicans to stick by the bill.
Trump previously threatened to veto the bill because it does not include a repeal of Section 230, which gives internet companies protection from the liability that is posted on their websites.
