With only a few days left before the unveiling of Huawei Mate X2, the Chinese smartphone maker has released another teaser subtly reiterating an imminent design overhaul. The company is expected to introduce its new foldable device that could have a similar form factor as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold.
Huawei Mate X2 design
Huawei released another cryptic promo image pertaining to the upcoming announcement of Mate X2, which has since made the rounds on Weibo. At first glance, the poster looks like an illustration of a clock. But after looking closely, tech fans will see that it is actually a half-folded smartphone. The direction of the light is also coming from the side that is folding inward, which hints at the massive redesign that awaits the folding smartphone series.
Both the Mate X and Mate Xs featured a form factor that has its massive screen folding outward, so people can use it like a typical smartphone when folded. This was a clear distinction from Samsung’s take on a foldable smartphone. Its Galaxy Z Fold series has always featured an inward folding screen while a second, smaller touchscreen is placed on the other side of the device.
An earlier leak claimed this is the design Huawei has in store for the Mate X2. However, that has not been suggested on any of the official teasers. The information came from a Weibo leaker who has had several accurate reports, though. The same render showed that the inward folding screen will not have any notch and the selfie camera appears to be placed on the external display.
Huawei Mate X2 release date
While Huawei has been secretive about the device’s design, it has not hidden the fact that the product launching is the Mate X2. The company will hold an event for the announcement that coincides with the start of the Mobile World Congress Shanghai on Monday, Feb. 22. Huawei’s launch is scheduled at 8 p.m. in local time (7 a.m. ET on the same day).
Huawei is expected to power the Mate X2 with the Kirin 9000 chipset. It remains to be seen if the company will provide early updates about its future flagship smartphones and its own operating system.
