With her days as White House adviser now numbered, Ivanka Trump is also being speculated to follow her father, Donald Trump, into politics. Recently, Ms. Trump received some backlash following her comments regarding the basis of COVID-19 lockdowns.
Ivanka retweeted a video showing a restaurant owner from Ventura, California, being cited for staying open despite orders to close down due to the pandemic. Ms. Trump then commented that the COVID-19 lockdowns being implemented are not based on science and that those small business owners are already struggling. Scientists, however, have disagreed with Ivanka’s opinion, citing that broad lockdowns are a way to slow down the transmission of coronavirus from one person to another.
“These blanket lockdowns are not grounded in science. These arbitrary rules imposed by callous politicians are destroying lives. It is just wrong for small business owners to have to fight so hard to keep their American dream alive,” tweeted Ivanka.
Ms. Trump’s claims were then met with backlash from users who immediately cited her father’s approach to the pandemic that has been widely criticized. The US is among the worst-hit countries of the global pandemic, with millions infected and hundreds of thousands dead. Justin Hendrix commented that this would not be happening had her father’s administration consulted with scientists and based their decisions on the science.
“Does Ivanka want to talk callousness?” Tweeted Gailen David. “Her father and husband worked on engineering ways to punish states that didn’t flatter her conman daddy causing chaos supplying PPE for front-line medical workers…”
At the same time, Ivanka was present at Christ Chapel Church in Woodbridge, Virginia, as part of the Farmers to Families event. Ms. Trump was seen delivering food boxes to families that were present at the venue, which was around 500 boxes. This comes as Ivanka may be looking to run for Senator in 2022 in Florida as she and her husband Jared Kushner are reportedly relocating there following their stint in Washington DC.
Ivanka started the Farmers to Families program in May this year. The program was granted $4.5 billion in funds in order to support farmers and families who have been severely affected by the pandemic and economic collapse.
