The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention remains under the interim leadership of Acting Director Jay Bhattacharya as the White House continues its search for a permanent head of the agency. A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services confirmed on Wednesday that Bhattacharya will carry out the delegable duties of the CDC director until a formal appointment is made.
The CDC has faced considerable leadership instability in recent months. The uncertainty began when President Donald Trump removed Director Susan Monarez following her reported opposition to vaccine policy changes proposed by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. HHS Deputy Secretary Jim O'Neill was then appointed to fill the role on an interim basis, before being succeeded by National Institutes of Health Director Jay Bhattacharya in February of this year.
According to the HHS spokesperson, Kennedy and HHS chief counselor Chris Klomp are actively collaborating with the White House to identify and vet candidates for the permanent director position. The Washington Post, which first reported the update, also revealed on Sunday that roughly six individuals are currently under consideration for the role. Among the reported candidates are former Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher, Mississippi State Health Officer Daniel Edney, and cardiologist Joseph Marine.
The ongoing leadership transition at one of the nation's most prominent public health agencies comes at a time of heightened scrutiny over federal health policy decisions. Stakeholders across the medical and public health communities are closely watching the selection process, as the incoming permanent director will play a critical role in shaping the CDC's direction on issues ranging from disease surveillance to vaccination programs. The White House has yet to announce a timeline for when a final decision will be made.
