President-elect Joe Biden continues to put together his potential administration that would immediately get to work by January when he is sworn in. As many wait and see the rest of the positions filled out by Biden, reports have surfaced who are the people being considered for the post of Justice Department Attorney General.
The Associated Press reports that several names for the post of DOJ attorney general have already been floated around as possible contenders. People knowledgeable with the matter revealed that among the contenders is New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. The other names that were mentioned were federal appeals court judge Merrick Garland, former deputy DOJ attorney general Sally Yates, and outgoing Alabama senator Doug Jones. Jones and Garland were the reported front-runners for the post, with Jones losing the recent elections and Garland being a rejected bid for Supreme Court Justice during Barack Obama’s final months as president.
Cuomo was pressed on whether he would be interested in the attorney general post in the past several weeks. The New York governor recently expressed that he has no intention of running for office or serve in the administration, but noted the importance of having an attorney general at this time.
It has yet to be seen how a possible nomination for Cuomo may be received among civil rights leaders. The same could also be said in the Republican-controlled Senate, noting the relationship between Cuomo and Donald Trump that has since frayed during the pandemic. Nevertheless, the announcement of who would become the next attorney general of the DOJ is not to be expected anytime soon.
Meanwhile, Biden’s son Hunter Biden was recently issued a subpoena by the Justice Department, seeking documents on his business dealings especially with the Ukraine firm Burisma apart from his financial records. Mr. Biden previously confirmed that he was being investigated through a statement released by the transition team. The president-elect is believed not to be the focus of the investigation not has he weighed in on the proceedings.
Months prior, Senate Republicans have also launched a probe into Hunter Biden’s dealings and also found no evidence of wrongdoing on his part. Hunter Biden’s business ties in Ukraine also set off the impeachment trials of Trump last year.
