US President Joe Biden is facing a lot of pressure and criticism over the chaos that has occurred in Afghanistan and recently addressed the crisis in his speech for the first time. MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace weighed in on the address, saying that most of the American public will agree with Biden.
Biden addressed the nation this week regarding the chaotic withdrawal of the US from Afghanistan, with the war-torn country falling into the hands of the insurgent group Taliban. While Biden acknowledged his regret and frustration over the manner of the withdrawal, he stood by his decision to pull the US out of the country and end the conflict that has gone for 20 years. Wallace, who previously worked as the White House Communications Director under George W. Bush, said that while most of the American public will agree with Biden, most of the press who covered his remarks will express their disagreement.
“95 percent of the American people will agree with everything he just said. 95 percent of the press covering this White House will disagree. And for an American president to finally be completely aligned with such an overwhelming majority of what American people think about Afghanistan is probably a tremendous relief to the American people,” said Wallace.
Ben Rhodes, who was Barack Obama’s National Security Adviser, also noted that Biden was always opposed to sending more troops into Afghanistan since 2009, during his vice presidency. Wallace also referred to Biden warning the Taliban that the US will retaliate if the insurgent group attacks US personnel that are on the way out of the country but that Afghans “essentially” ignored the work laid out by the US.
Many Republicans, especially those known to be loyal to disgraced former President Donald Trump, jumped at the chance to criticize Biden after his speech, with some already calling for Biden to resign following the chaos that ensued. Among them is Florida GOP Senator Rick Scott, who suggested invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Biden from the presidency.
“After the disastrous events in Afghanistan, we must confront a serious question: Is Joe Biden capable of discharging the duties of his office or has time come to exercise the provisions of the 25th Amendment?” tweeted Scott.
