New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is set to participate in a solemn 9/11 memorial wreath-laying ceremony alongside Britain’s King Charles during the monarch’s upcoming visit to the United States, according to an official statement released Friday. The ceremony will take place at the World Trade Center site, honoring the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, which remain the deadliest in U.S. history.
The 9/11 memorial stands at the former site of the Twin Towers, where al Qaeda militants hijacked commercial airplanes and crashed them into the buildings, killing at least 2,606 people. Among the victims were 67 British citizens, highlighting the international impact of the tragedy and the enduring ties between the United States and the United Kingdom.
Despite appearing together at the memorial, Mayor Mamdani and King Charles are not expected to hold a private meeting, as confirmed by the mayor’s press secretary, Joe Calvello. The event will be part of King Charles’ broader state visit to the U.S., scheduled from April 27 to April 30, which includes stops in Washington, D.C., New York, and Virginia.
During his visit, King Charles is also expected to deliver a historic joint address to the U.S. Congress. This will mark the first time a British monarch has addressed Congress since Queen Elizabeth II did so in 1991, making it a significant diplomatic moment.
U.S. President Donald Trump is set to meet privately with King Charles and will host a formal state banquet in honor of the king and Queen Camilla. The visit comes at a time of strained U.S.-UK relations, with Trump expressing optimism that King Charles could help strengthen diplomatic ties. In a recent BBC interview, Trump described the monarch as “a brave man” and “a great man,” adding that his presence could positively influence relations between Washington and London.
This high-profile visit underscores the importance of international diplomacy, historical remembrance, and the enduring alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom.
