Mark Harmon is one of the few “NCIS” cast members who has been in the CBS series since the beginning. And rumors of him leaving the police procedural show in the near future would always circulate from time to time. So what are the chances of seeing Leroy Jethro Gibbs turning over his badge?
The possibility of Harmon leaving “NCIS” was more talked about after Pauley Perrette left the show. Like Harmon, Perrette had also been a series regular since season 1 but she officially exited from the show by the end of season 15 in 2018.
However, there is a slim chance that Harmon will follow Perrette’s steps anytime soon. CarterMatt reported that the 67-year-old actor has already signed a contract through “NCIS” season 17. He will most likely remain a series regular, which means Gibbs fans can expect to see him around, at least, until 2020 if the show will not alter its annual schedule.
Over the years, there had been wild rumors about Mark Harmon’s dwindling health affecting his role in “NCIS.” But, so far, none of those claims really turned out to be accurate and Harmon rarely missed an episode just like Gibbs rarely takes a vacation leave.
Aside from his health, his attachment to an all-new cop procedural series with CBS also sparked rumors that he might be leaving “NCIS” soon. Mark Harmon is one of the executive producers for the TV series adaptation of John Sandford’s “Prey” novel series.
Note that Harmon is also an executive producer to two “NCIS” sister series based on the agency's satellite offices in Los Angeles and New Orleans. This means the upcoming “Prey” TV show is not the first project Harmon will take on outside of the original “NCIS" series. So his exit because of the making of “Prey” is very unlikely.
It is safe to say that Gibbs never lost his charm after over a decade and fans just love watching him solve cases with his band of investigators. So if ever Mark Harmon decides to retire from the show, CBS will most likely prepare the fans and make the proper announcement before it happens.
