Incoming first lady Dr. Jill Biden has already run into some controversy even before she moves into the White House in January. After a controversial opinion piece regarding her doctor title, former first lady Michelle Obama came to her defense.
Obama came to the defense of Dr. Biden following the publishing of a controversial opinion piece on the Wall Street Journal. Penned by Joseph Epstein, the article mocks the incoming first lady for using her doctor title and made use of undermining nicknames like “kiddo” to refer to her while saying that she should not use “Dr.” as she is not a medical doctor. The incoming first lady holds a doctorate degree in Education. Many other prominent figures came to Dr. Biden’s defense, including Martin Luther King’s daughter Bernice King.
The former first lady shared a photo of the two of them during their days in the White House on Instagram and wrote that the controversial opinion piece highlighted the struggles of women in being taken seriously. Michelle also praised the incoming first lady for maintaining a professional career even as she had duties as the second lady during their husbands’ eight years as president and vice president.
“...Right now, we’re all seeing what also happens to so many professional women, whether their titles are Dr., Ms., Mrs., or even First Lady: All too often, our accomplishments are met with skepticism, even derision. We’re doubted by those who choose the weakness of ridicule over the strength of respect,” wrote Michelle. “Dr. Biden gives us a better example. And this is why I feel so strongly that we could not ask for a better First Lady. She will be a terrific role model not just for young girls but for all of us, wearing her accomplishments with grace, good humor, and yes, pride.”
Back in 2018, the former first lady shared the comfortable living situation of her daughter Sasha Obama in an interview on Ellen. Michelle revealed that Sasha has a two-room suite in their Washington DC home, and joked that her husband Barack Obama has a smaller room that serves as his office.
