The Biden administration is currently facing a situation at the southern border with the surge of migrants hoping to cross. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has assured that the administration has the situation under control even with the increasing numbers of migrants at the border continue to increase.
Pelosi told the press at the Capitol last week that the Biden administration is keeping the situation at the border under control, immediately drawing comparisons to the treatment given to migrants by the Trump administration. The House Speaker’s comment comes a day after White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki backtracked on her own previous comments, describing the influx of unaccompanied child migrants at the border as a “challenge” rather than a “crisis.”
“The Biden administration has this under control. It is changed. And it will take some time. But it is values-based. Humanitarian in its aspects. Pragmatic with a plan to get things done,” said the House Speaker. “I think that the administration is pulling this thing under control and I think it’s important to know that.”
Pelosi noted that more migrants seek to cross the southern border to the US in the spring and so it is to be expected. However, Pelosi mentioned Joe Biden’s previous comment towards immigrants at the moment, telling them not to come, amidst reports of facilities that are already overpopulated. Customs and Border Protection has also reportedly requested to move migrants to the Canadian border to mitigate the surge. The agency also requested the assistance of the ICE to relocate migrants after 1,000 families and unaccompanied children crossed the border last week.
Meanwhile, Pelosi’s office recently published several blog posts highlighting the positive coverage of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan that was passed. The positive coverage that Pelosi’s office showed came from the newspapers of districts that have been represented by Republicans. The passage of the sweeping bill was done on party lines without any Republican support despite receiving bipartisan support from the American public.
Pelosi’s office said that the House Republicans will probably dislike reading their local papers at the moment. One blog post mentioned the plan being a big help to local communities nationwide.
