‘Orange Is The New Black’ failed to secure an Emmy nomination for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards much to the disbelief of fans. Meanwhile, Netflix is currently working on the upcoming season 5 slated to premiere on 2017. Actress Lori Petty remained optimistic for the return of her fan-favorite character Lolly in the incoming season.
According to Decider, Netflix’s comedy-drama television series was snubbed at this year’s Emmy Award nominations despite the network snagging almost every category with its other shows such as ‘House of Cards’, ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’, ‘Making A Murderer’, and ‘Bloodline’.
‘Orange Is The New Black’ has become one of Netflix’s most-watched original series since its premiered on July 2013. For its first season, it earned numerous accolades and nominations including 12 Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series – ultimately nabbing three.
For its second season, it received four Emmy nominations including Outstanding Drama Series after new guidelines forced it to change to the drama category. According to TV Guide, actress Uzo Aduba even won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. This year, Aduba didn’t get nominated.
However, it seems that this year’s Emmys will be devoid of ‘Orange Is The New Black’ in any category. Critics claim that season 3, the season eligible, wasn’t strong enough to merit some attention. Although season 4 was reportedly a great run for the show, the Emmys overlook everything beyond the May 31 cut-off.
Other television shows that surprisingly failed to get an Emmy nomination this year include Lifetime’s ‘UnReal’, Showtime’s ‘Billions’, and FX’s ‘American Horror Story’.
Meanwhile, Netflix is busy preparing for season 5 of ‘Orange Is The New Black’. According to Screen Crush, Lori Petty said that she was convinced her character Lolly Whitehill will be making a reappearance in season 5. Lolly was introduced in season 2 and was promoted to series regular status in season 3. She was last seen admitted into a psychiatric ward in season 4.
Petty said, “I certainly hope [we'll see Lolly again]. I do think we will. I can’t say for sure, but I absolutely think we will. They are just now filming episode one [of season five] and you know how we ended season four. They have a lot to deal with right now! I’m just waiting on the phone call to get back on the plane. I’m sure it will come, but we have 13 episodes and they’ve got a lot to take care of, so we’ll see.”
‘Orange Is The New Black’ is a comedy-drama television series created by Jenji Kohan and based on Piper Kerman’s memoir ‘Orange Is The New Black: My Year In A Women’s Prison’. The series streamed on Netflix on July 2013 and was renewed for a fifth season, sixth, and seventh season. Season 5 is scheduled to premiere some time in 2017.
