The year 2019 was like a roller coaster ride for fans eagerly waiting on any updates about “Overlord” season 4. There was a time they got very excited following a report that the anime’s return has been confirmed only to be let down a few days later as more details surface about the status of the show.
‘Overlord’ season 4: Is the anime continuation confirmed, and will it premiere soon?
“Overlord” anime is based on the same title light novel series created by Kugane Maruyama and illustrated by so-bin. Both attended the 2019 AnimagiC event in Germany last summer. Naturally, they were asked about “Overlord” season 4’s production and release date. This is where the confusion started.
The panel led to a tweet from German publisher KSM announcing that Maruyama, so-bin, and anime scriptwriter Yukie Sugawara confirmed the making of “Overlord” season 4. That online post unsurprisingly went viral and even sparked reports about the show’s supposed return.
However, other fans were immediately wary of believing the tweet because other official channels of the franchise remained quiet and did not make a single post about “Overlord” season 4. It turned out they were right to feel that way.
‘Overlord’ season 4: What’s the real status of its production
Another fan shared on the “Overlord” Fandom.com discussions that no official announcements were made at the convention. When Maruyama was asked about “Overlord” season 4, he reportedly said he is not aware of the official plans for the anime series. This is not far-fetched because, technically, the anime’s distributor has already purchased the rights to produce the show, and they should be the ones to know about its future.
Sugawara, who has been working on the show’s three seasons, did not confirm anything and only stated that “Overlord” season 4 is likely happening. Despite Sugawara’s history with the show, it is also understandable if the writer does not know anything yet about the production. As Monsters & Critics pointed out, Sugawara remains a freelancer who would only be called once the show enters production again.
Officially, the status of “Overlord” season 4 is still unknown. That means anything reported about it is mere speculations. It is also difficult to estimate its release date since the first three seasons did not have a consistent production timeline. On the other hand, “Overlord” is one of the most popular shows with enough source materials to allow its continuation, so it is more likely getting renewed in the future.
