Dutch centrist leader Rob Jetten, 38, is on the verge of making history as the youngest and first openly gay prime minister of the Netherlands, following a strong showing by his D66 party in Wednesday’s national election. Known for his transformation from a serious climate minister to an optimistic “yes, we can” politician, Jetten’s upbeat campaign has resonated with voters seeking positivity and progress.
Expanding beyond D66’s traditional focus on climate change and education, Jetten tackled pressing issues such as immigration and the housing crisis, drawing support from moderates and even former right-wing voters. He accused far-right leader Geert Wilders of “hijacking Dutch identity” and using social issues to target Muslims, emphasizing unity and cooperation instead. On election day, Jetten posted a motivational message urging voters to “beat Wilders” through collective optimism.
While Jetten’s sexuality has not been central to his campaign, his potential victory marks a milestone for LGBTQ representation in politics. The Netherlands—pioneer of same-sex marriage legalization 25 years ago—continues to lead in equality and inclusivity. Jetten’s personal life also drew public attention after a TikTok trend in 2021 led him to meet his fiancé, Argentine hockey player Nicolas Keenan, whom he plans to marry next August.
Jetten’s campaign combined strategic messaging, increased advertising, and television visibility, including an appearance on a popular quiz show aired during the campaign. His pragmatic proposals include processing asylum applications outside the EU, improving migrant integration, and investing €2 billion annually to build ten new towns to solve the housing shortage. He also aims to simplify regulations to construct 100,000 new homes each year.
With charisma, digital savvy, and a unifying message, Rob Jetten now stands ready to lead a new era of progressive yet practical governance in the Netherlands.
