Samsung Heavy Industries Co. has obtained approval in principle (AIP) for its 9.5-megawatt wind power turbine offshore floater from the Norwegian ship quality assurance and risk management company, DNV.
An AIP means its basic design has been confirmed to meets the agency's technical requirements and safety standards.
Samsung Heavy's floater stabilizes offshore wind turbines and remote-control maintenance technologies for them.
The South Korean firm ventured into designing and manufacturing floaters due to an increased demand for floating offshore wind power generation due to its strong efficiency in producing electricity.
Demand for offshore floating wind farms is expected to even grow sharply.
