Paolo Sorrentino, the creator of the highly-acclaimed limited series “The Young Pope,” is reportedly working on a new show called “The New Pope.”
Deadline said the new show will be jointly produced by HBO and Sky, and will mark Sorrentino’s return to tackling the world of modern papacy following the “The Young Pope,” which starred Jude Law. Variety noted that although Sorrentino, HBO, and Sky have been mum about the details surrounding the new show, “The New Pope” will no doubt be developed similarly to an anthology series just like Ryan Murphy’s “American Horror Story” and “American Crime Story” franchises and HBO’s other anthology series “Fargo” and “True Detective.” Citing sources, “The New Pope” will still keep elements “The Young Pope” is known for, and that Law as Lenny Belardo would probably make an appearance in the upcoming series.
The Hollywood Reporter said “The New Pope” will have Sorrentino and Umberto Contarello to write for the series, and will be produced by Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani for Wildside, in co-production with Mediapro. International distribution will be handled by FreMantle Media International.
As for “The Young Pope,” producers last year confirmed that there will be a second season. According to Wildside, they are currently developing, and will take it to their partners from the first iteration for co-financing after Sorrentino finishes the script.
"We are of course hoping to do it, but nothing is signed yet," Sky Italia chief of content Andrea Scrosati.
