The Trump administration has asked the Pentagon to deploy 100 troops to Illinois, escalating tensions over immigration enforcement in Chicago and surrounding suburbs. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker revealed that the Illinois National Guard received word of a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) memo outlining the request. While it remains unclear what type of troops could be sent, the Pentagon confirmed it had received the request to safeguard federal personnel, property, and operations.
Governor Pritzker, a Democrat, accused President Trump of using immigration enforcement as a “pretext to deploy military troops” against the Chicago area. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson echoed defiance, pledging to protect immigrant and undocumented communities despite increasing federal actions.
In recent weeks, “Operation Midway Blitz,” Trump’s aggressive deportation campaign, has sparked daily clashes between immigration agents and protesters. Heavily armed Customs and Border Protection agents have patrolled downtown Chicago, creating jarring scenes of rifles and fatigues against the backdrop of luxury shops, boat tours, and public parks. Federal officers have also used pepper balls, tear gas, and other tactics to disperse demonstrators at facilities such as the immigration processing center in Broadview, Illinois.
The Justice Department, under Attorney General Pam Bondi, directed agents to defend ICE facilities in both Chicago and Portland, Oregon. Local officials, including Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss, reported injuries during protests, while media crews described being targeted with chemical agents.
Concerns grew after an ICE officer fatally shot Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez in Franklin Park earlier this month. While DHS claimed the officer acted in self-defense, bodycam footage suggested otherwise, prompting demands for transparency.
As the fiscal year closes, ICE has intensified arrests nationwide, sending investigative agents to cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, and Seattle. With federal authorities pushing record deportation numbers, local leaders warn that the administration’s tactics are straining communities and eroding trust.
