The Trump administration announced the official renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and Alaska's Denali peak back to Mount McKinley. The changes came as part of a series of executive actions signed by President Donald Trump shortly after taking office, fulfilling a campaign promise.
The Interior Department stated that renaming these landmarks underscores the nation's dedication to honoring its historical legacy. Denali, previously named Mount McKinley after President William McKinley, was renamed in 1975 to reflect its Indigenous name, meaning "tall" in the Koyukon language. Trump's move reinstates the original name, which he tied to McKinley's economic and territorial accomplishments during his presidency from 1897 to 1901, including the annexation of Hawaii, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
Trump highlighted McKinley's business acumen and contributions to U.S. growth, stating in his inaugural address that he "made our country very rich through tariffs and talent."
While the U.S. Geological Survey can implement domestic naming directives, the international recognition of the Gulf of America is uncertain. Mexico, which shares the coastline, has emphasized the historical significance and global usage of the Gulf of Mexico name for maritime navigation.
In response, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum humorously proposed renaming North America to "Mexican America," referencing historical maps of the region.
The renaming decisions, however, have sparked mixed reactions, with some viewing the changes as a nod to U.S. heritage, while others see them as controversial revisions to well-established names.
These actions reflect Trump's broader vision of redefining America's identity while emphasizing its historical achievements and cultural pride.
