U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that a luxury Boeing 747, offered by the Qatari government, will serve as a temporary Air Force One. Trump emphasized the jet is being donated to the U.S. government, not to him personally, framing the move as a cost-saving measure amid delays in Boeing’s official replacements.
“The Boeing 747 is being given to the United States Air Force/Department of Defense, NOT TO ME!” Trump wrote. “Why should our military, and therefore our taxpayers, be forced to pay hundreds of millions of Dollars when they can get it for FREE from a country that wants to reward us for a job well done?”
The aircraft, valued at approximately $400 million, is among the most expensive gifts ever offered to the U.S. and would be temporarily used until new aircraft are delivered. Trump also noted that the jet would be transferred to his future presidential library after his term ends.
While Trump positioned the move as fiscally responsible, the offer has sparked ethical and national security concerns in Washington. Lawmakers and officials have voiced worries about the precedent it sets, particularly the implications of accepting high-value gifts from foreign governments.
The unusual donation highlights ongoing issues with delays in Boeing’s production of Air Force One replacements and raises questions about the intersection of diplomacy, defense spending, and presidential influence.
With the 2024 election approaching and Trump’s influence still dominant in Republican circles, this development is expected to draw further scrutiny from both political allies and opponents. The Biden administration has not yet commented on the matter.
