The Pentagon has submitted multiple proposals to the White House for "Golden Dome," a massive U.S. missile defense initiative backed by President Donald Trump. Designed as a space-based shield against advanced missile threats—including ICBMs and hypersonic weapons—the project could cost over $500 billion across 20 years, according to CNN sources and a Congressional Budget Office estimate.
The 2026 defense budget includes $25 billion for initial development. Trump is expected to decide soon between small, medium, and large-scale deployment options presented by the Department of Defense. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed the President has been briefed and a formal path will be announced shortly.
Private defense firms such as SpaceX, Anduril, and Palantir (NASDAQ:PLTR) have pitched their technologies for integration, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly supportive. A program lead, dubbed the “golden dome czar,” will soon be appointed, with Gen. Michael A. Guetlein among the top contenders.
Despite its ambition, Golden Dome remains largely conceptual. Sources say around 100 existing defense programs are involved, with only the command-and-control integration system being entirely new. The plan has already faced delays; Trump’s initial deadline of March 28 was missed, reportedly causing frustration within the administration.
Driven by rising threats from China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea, the initiative draws comparisons to Israel’s Iron Dome. However, experts stress that the scale and complexity of defending the entire U.S. mainland is far greater.
Gen. Chance Saltzman, chief of space operations, noted the cost will likely exceed current projections: “I’ve never seen an early estimate that was too high.”
If approved, Golden Dome would become one of the most ambitious—and expensive—defense initiatives in U.S. history.
