Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Saturday that Ukrainian forces have recaptured the village of Andriivka in the northeastern Sumy region, amid intensified fighting with Russian troops. The region has become a new flashpoint, with Russia reportedly amassing over 53,000 troops. Zelenskiy praised the 225th Separate Assault Regiment for its role in the operation and noted additional gains near Pokrovsk and Kupiansk—key battlegrounds in Ukraine’s ongoing defensive efforts.
Ukraine has halted Russian advances in Sumy, with Zelenskiy stating that fighting is occurring up to 7 km from the border. Despite heavy pressure, Ukrainian forces are holding defensive lines along more than 1,000 km of the frontline. He rejected Russian claims of entering Dnipropetrovsk region, calling them staged attempts to show symbolic gains.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed it had seized Zelenyi Kut, southwest of Pokrovsk. The Donetsk region continues to face sustained assaults, while Russia aims to create a “buffer zone” in Sumy and Kharkiv. Ukraine's military blog DeepState confirmed Ukrainian resistance in some areas, but also acknowledged limited Russian advances.
Zelenskiy reiterated that full territorial recovery is unlikely through military means alone and called for stronger international sanctions to pressure Moscow into negotiations. Recent drone attacks by Ukraine inside Russian territory and on the Crimean bridge have escalated the conflict further.
In positive news, Ukraine completed its fourth prisoner exchange in a week, bringing home soldiers—many captured during the 2022 siege of Mariupol. Officials also confirmed the return of 1,200 fallen soldiers’ bodies. Russian state media reported that Moscow has not received any of its war dead in return.
The war in Ukraine, now in its fourth year, shows no signs of de-escalation as both sides continue to push offensives and diplomatic efforts remain stalled.
