British Prime Minister Keir Starmer held talks on Sunday with U.S. President Donald Trump and the leaders of France, Germany, and Italy to discuss Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. The leaders emphasized the urgent need for an unconditional ceasefire, with attention turning to Trump’s scheduled call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.

The conversation followed a joint diplomatic mission to Kyiv on May 10, where major European powers, including France and Germany, endorsed a 30-day unconditional ceasefire proposed by Trump and supported by Ukraine. According to a Downing Street spokesperson, the leaders also warned that fresh sanctions could be imposed if Moscow fails to engage in meaningful peace talks.

French President Emmanuel Macron underscored the global push for de-escalation, stating on X (formerly Twitter), “Tomorrow, President Putin must show he wants peace by accepting the 30-day unconditional ceasefire proposed by President Trump and backed by Ukraine and Europe.”

The renewed diplomatic push comes as Russia continues its slow battlefield advance, while expressing concerns that any ceasefire could allow Ukraine to regroup and rearm. Moscow insists on clarifying ceasefire terms before agreeing to any pause in fighting.

UK Foreign Minister David Lammy criticized Russia’s stance after ceasefire discussions between Ukraine and Russia collapsed in under two hours. Lammy accused Moscow of “obfuscating” and delaying progress, echoing Trump’s statement that “nothing could happen” until his direct meeting with Putin.

The war, now in its fourth year, remains a central geopolitical crisis, with Western powers uniting in a bid to halt further escalation and pressure Russia into peace negotiations amid mounting global concern.
