Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy described his recent phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump as their “best” and “most productive” conversation to date, highlighting a renewed focus on bolstering Ukraine’s air defenses.

In his nightly address on Saturday, Zelenskiy emphasized the importance of the discussion, which centered on securing additional U.S. military support, particularly the Patriot missile system. “The Patriot system is precisely the key to protection against ballistic threats,” he said, expressing gratitude for Trump’s willingness to assist.

The two leaders also addressed several other undisclosed topics, which are expected to be reviewed in upcoming bilateral meetings between U.S. and Ukrainian officials.

Trump confirmed to reporters on Friday that the call went well and reiterated his concern over Russia’s continued aggression. He criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for showing no signs of seeking a ceasefire during their recent conversation. “They’re going to need [Patriot missiles] for defense,” Trump stated, noting the severity of Russia’s recent attacks.

The urgency of Ukraine’s air defense needs has grown amid intensified Russian strikes, including what Kyiv officials described as the largest drone assault of the war. That attack on the Ukrainian capital came just hours after Trump’s call with Putin, underscoring the escalating threat Ukraine faces.

As the war enters its 40th month, Kyiv is pushing for enhanced Western support to counter Russia’s renewed offensive. Zelenskiy’s comments signal cautious optimism that U.S. backing will remain strong, particularly if the Patriot system and other critical military aid are delivered promptly. The ongoing diplomatic exchanges between the U.S. and Ukraine could prove pivotal in shaping the conflict’s trajectory over the coming months.
