New York City’s political landscape shifted dramatically after Mayor Eric Adams suspended his struggling reelection campaign, leaving Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani and former Governor Andrew Cuomo as the central rivals in the upcoming mayoral election. Despite Adams’ withdrawal, political analysts say Mamdani’s momentum remains strong, positioning him as the frontrunner in the November 4 race.
Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist born in Uganda, surged to prominence after a stunning primary victory that made him the Democratic Party’s standard bearer. Since then, he has secured key endorsements from high-profile figures including Vice President Kamala Harris and New York Governor Kathy Hochul. Polls consistently show him ahead of his rivals, with a recent Marist University survey placing him at 45% compared to Cuomo’s 24%, Republican Curtis Sliwa’s 17%, and Adams’ 9%. When factoring in Adams’ exit, Mamdani’s lead remains decisive at 46% against Cuomo’s 30% and Sliwa’s 18%.
Mamdani’s campaign has thrived on grassroots energy and small-donor fundraising, amassing $15 million, compared to Cuomo’s $9 million largely supported by traditional donors and business interests. Political observers note that Adams’ scandal-ridden tenure, including federal bribery charges, weakened his chances early on, and his suspension is unlikely to meaningfully alter the race dynamics.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has repeatedly attacked Mamdani, attempting to undermine his progressive platform. Yet experts argue these attacks may inadvertently strengthen Mamdani by energizing voters opposed to Trump’s policies. Cuomo, running as an independent after resigning as governor in 2021, continues to attract establishment donors through political action committees like Fix the City, but analysts say it may not be enough to close Mamdani’s commanding lead.
With five weeks until Election Day, Mamdani remains well ahead, buoyed by progressive enthusiasm, small-dollar donations, and a wave of endorsements that solidify his place as the candidate to beat in New York City’s mayoral race.
